Spence Gallery

Established in 2005, Spence Gallery specialises in showcasing the diversity of Canadian artists. From its inception, the goal was to build a gallery that reflects the diversity of Toronto, the city in which it is located. Diversity in terms of the art and artists and also in relation to the gallery’s audience and clientele. In the early years of the gallery, theme-based group exhibits were launched every six to eight weeks. After approximately three years in operation the gallery entered the international market through art fairs in the United States. Since then, Spence Gallery has participated in over 50 art fairs in the US, UK and Asia. Spence Gallery represents over 30 emerging and mid-career artists.

For years, Nahúm Flores’ work has been an ongoing commentary on migration, displacement & transitional states. His mixed media work fuses photographic transfers, drawing and matter intuitively layered on canvas, plexiglass, wood panels or tins. Flores’ innovative process employs a variety of materials such as acrylic paint, paper collage, textile, gel medium and ink processed to create an abstract base on which he paints figures and integrates text. Against this background, his characters appear to be lingering in a constant state of flux, drifting, migrating between spaces. The exhibition will include over 20 thematically connected small works and a few large-scale works.

Flores’ pieces will be accompanied by works on paper by the Z’otz Collective. Z’otz* is comprised of three artists of Latin American heritage including Flores, who collaborate in creating each piece of art. By including the work of Z’otz*, the audience will be able to see Flores’ contribution to the Collective.
