Kamiar Maleki: Laurent, tell us a bit about yourself and your work as co-publisher, co-owner and editor Whitewall Magazine!
Laurent Moïsi: The magazine was founded by my business partner Michael Klug in 2006 since its inception Whitewall Magazine worked on bridging the gap in between contemporary art and fashion. Now it’s seems obvious as every luxury brand in the planet uses contemporary art in their ads, messaging... and tries to tie in with fairs and art events around the world. Our work is to go beyond and offer our partner new ways to interact with these communities and offer our readers new and engaging ways to discover exciting artists, creators and galleries alike.
KM: What brings art, lifestyle, fashion and design together, what have they in common and what are the differences?
LM: I think more than ever creativity, whether as an artist, a designer, an architect comes from mixing emotions and experiences. We all live in the same world and 2020 showed us the fragility of everything that we took for granted. Creativity as an aspiration and as a way of living for artists, and creators is crucial to make people hope, dream and escape.
Art, lifestyle, fashion and design are together spreading this message of hope each using their own tools and medium but all trying to have a positive impact in confront of social and environmental responsibility.
KM: As publisher of an art and fashion magazine you get a lot of behind the scenes moments, would you like to share your funniest story?
LM: Behind the scenes is really a unique way of discovering the true nature of people. So many amazing moments with artists fashion designers but all of them are off the record so ask me in person next time you’ll see me in person!
KM: Whitewall Magazine has been collaborating with VOLTA as media partner over many years, what drives this partnership?
LM: I think the fundamental shared value of quality and discovery of new and talents is what brings Whitewall to partner with VOLTA. The multi-local strategy and positioning of VOLTA resonate absolutely with our own vision and way of considering the art world .
KM: What are your next collaborations that you are working on?
LM: We are working on many new partnerships mostly on digital with key partners adapting to the new reality of 2020 and the never-ending pandemic (at least in the west).
We will also launch a new digital initiative soon, which I will be happy to share with you when the time is right.
KM: With the pandemic have you had to strategize your plans? Partnerships?
LM: Constantly... I think our job description changed radically since the first outbreak in March. We have been mostly responding to emergency to stay afloat and answers the needs of our partners. Yet we have been able to continue creating what I believe to be among the best content we created in a long time for the spring summer and fall issues of Whitewall and for that the editorial team lead by Katy Donoghue as been crucial.
