What is an NFT?
Thursday, June 16, 6 PM, Price CHF 40, includes admission to the fair
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) seem to have exploded out of the ether in the past years. But are NFTs worth the money—or the hype? Some experts say they’re a bubble poised to pop. Others believe NFTs are here to stay, and that they will change the art world forever.
Discover, connect, collect. Immerse yourself in art.
Friday, June 17, 6 PM & Sunday, June 19, 2 PM, Price CHF 40, includes admission to the fair
VOLTA’s cornerstones are: Discover. Connect. Collect. The fair was established with the intention of providing a foundational platform for dynamic younger and middle-market galleries seeking participation in the art world’s major cities. Discover this year’s highlights and immerse yourself into the fair’s essential elements: the artists and their work.
CULTURAL SPOTLIGHT PAVILION
VOLTA Art Fair collaborates with ATHR Foundation, a newly established art foundation based in the Middle East. At VOLTA Basel, ATHR will present ten emerging artists based in Saudi Arabia, giving them the opportunity to showcase their works at an international platform for the first time.
With its first-ever Cultural Spotlight Pavilion, VOLTA Basel sets the focus on Saudi-based artists: ATHR Foundation presents works by ten unrepresented emerging artists in a fair pavilion measuring 70 square meters. Complementing the fair’s international lineup of artists, the chosen artworks highlight the diverse creative output from Saudi Arabia. Curated by Jeddah-based Jumana Ghouth, ATHR Foundation displays a variety of works that are connected in their shared reflection upon the notion of intangibility. The presented works explore the attempt at manifesting these intangible truths into material culture as abstracted physical interpretations of the unknown.

MEYERS CULINARIUM
Marcus Meyer, chef and founder of MEYERS Culinarium, has been VOLTA’s on-site restaurant partner since 2014. Following his training in leading restaurants “Les Quatre Saisons”, “Bel Etage” at the guest- and culture center Teufelhof, and “Matisse”, Meyer founded a test kitchen and workshop within the historic landmark Markthalle in Basel’s city center, creating multi-course dinners with an emphasis on seasonality and locality. Einen naturverbundenen Stil, or in other words, a style close to nature.
Meyer’s pop-up restaurants at VOLTA have been as elaborate and immersive as his cooking, from tranquil gardens to surreal mushroom forests to swank buvettes rivaling the best Rhine-side bars. The Culinarium offers a full spread of delicious dining options for galleries and guests. And all the while with Meyer himself behind the grill, preparing and plating among his talented team.

Meeting Point: Novartis Main Gate, Fabrikstrasse 2, 4056 Basel
The campus located at the Novartis headquarters has become a true Mecca for modern architecture. The planning was conducted by the famous Italian architect Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani.
Every building on the campus was designed by a different architect. There are buildings by Frank O. Gehry, Diener & Diener, Sanaa and many more; the realisation of this city in a city is still in progress. The campus is currently not yet open to the public, but this will transform to a public site in late autumn.

The Belgian artist Emmanuel Van der Auwera is more than just an attentive observer of our time. «Seeing is Revealing» – seeing as revealing, as uncovering something underlying runs like a thread through his work. In his expansive video installations, he devotes himself to questions of perception – from the mediated experience of a world seen through a smartphone to the images that come from intelligent machines. He often refers to real events, uses existing material from the Internet, which he re-sorts, deconstructs for its meaning and transforms into impressive aesthetic image tableaus. For his first solo exhibition in Switzerland, Van der Auwera created three new works that will be on view at HEK for the first time. The exhibition offers a representative overview of the artist’s work.

After the exhibition at the Mu.ZEE in Ostend in 2021, Exhumer le Futur (Digging up the Future) at La Kunsthalle Mulhouse is the second exhibition of Maarten Vanden Eynde‘s work, based on the book of the same name that contextualizes his work and retraces 20 years of persevering research, still active.
Through a close observation of the industrial boom and increasing globalization, Maarten Vanden Eynde confronts the idea of progress with the depletion of the earth’s resources. What are we leaving to the future?
In Mulhouse, a selection of his listed works is organized around the industrial question, that of production processes, the transformation of raw materials and products.

The Museum Tinguely was inaugurated in 1996 as a gift to the people of Basel and to mark the centenary of Roche’s founding. Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely’s widow, supported the project by donating over 50 machine-sculptures and a considerable number of drawings and documents from the artist’s estate to a specially established Roche Centenary Foundation. Roche built the museum, contributed works from its own holdings and provided funding for additions to the museum’s collections. The museum’s operating costs and the costs of maintaining the adjacent Solitude Park have been funded entirely and exclusively by Roche since 1996.
VITRA DESIGN MUSEUM
Plastic: Remaking Our World
Until 4 September 2022, Vitra Design Museum
The exhibition »Plastic: Remaking Our World« at the Vitra Design Museum examines the history and future of this controversial material: from its meteoric rise in the twentieth century to its environmental impact and to cutting-edge solutions for a more sustainable use of plastic. Exhibits include rarities from the dawn of the plastic age and objects of the pop era as well as numerous contemporary designs and projects ranging from efforts to clean up rivers and oceans to smart concepts for waste reduction.
Precious Plastic
Until 4 September 2022, Vitra Design Museum Gallery
A satellite to »Plastic: Remaking Our World« in the main building designed by Frank Gehry, »Precious Plastic« addresses the issue of recyclability and is organised around the eponymous Dutch initiative launched by Dave Hakkens, which supplies open source plans for machines that allow people to take recycling into their own hands. The display gives fascinating insights into different types of plastic and the complex technologies used for recycling and upcycling processes.

Colour Rush! An Installation by Sabine Marcelis
Until 14 May 2023, Vitra Schaudepot
Following an invitation from the Vitra Design Museum, Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis has transformed the Vitra Schaudepot in one simple, sweeping gesture by sorting its roughly four hundred exhibits by colour. The installation shows the collection from new perspectives and produces fascinating cross-references between periods and styles, at the same time providing visitors with an overwhelming immersive experience. The presentation is complemented by historical and contemporary objects and documents from the museum archives that illustrate how designers from different eras approached the subject.

Tomi Ungerer, ohne Titel (Das Martyrium der dreifachen Identität), 2009, Collection Würth,
FORUM WÜRTH ARLESHEIM
Tomi Ungerer
December 03 – August 14, 2022
The French artist Tomi Ungerer is one of the most important and at the same time most provocative illustrators of our time. His enormous oeuvre comprises more than 40’000 drawings, oil paintings, poster designs, collages, lithographs, woodcuts and objects. In addition, there are his 140 books, ranging from social satire to fairy tales, including modern children’s classis such as «The Three Robbers» and «Moon Man».
Throughout his lifetime he was politically engaged. His posters protesting against the Vietnam War and racial segregation are eloquent examples of this and are among the finest products of contemporary graphic art.
His work is characterized by spontaneity, intellectual curiosity, a love of experimentation, and obsessive search for the perfect line. In short, this brilliant observer of banalities and absurdities convincingly portrayed the «human comedy».
