sobering galerie
Sobering’s exhibition for VOLTA Basel is an immersion into an aesthetics of sensitivity, that interrogates the place of women in art, as actors or subjects of representation. The gallery associates the most recent work of five young female artists in a fruitful dialogue on femininity and intimacy.
Sarah Maison unveils sleeping figures, with a soft chromatic palette guiding the spectator into a dreamlike world. That same atmosphere can also be found in Lucile Piketty’s very personal work in which she represents her sisters, seemingly wandering through the night, leading the spectator to follow along and wonder about their nocturnal stroll. Anine Kirsten on the other hand works on luminous sculptures that catch the eye with their lively and sour colours. Neon light is also a central component in Bolivian artist Kenia Almaraz Murillo’s work, which offers the perfect balance between tradition and modernity in her loyal and loving homage to her Bolivian roots. As for Angélique Chesnesec, her work focuses on embroidering copper and steel, thus bringing about daintiness to those materials.
Simultaneously, sobering galerie offers to the public Chilean artist José Cori’s artworks in which colour has the main role.
