New world views, fresh perspectives and strong women: these are the three key elements of this year's curatorial concepts at VOLTA Basel 2024. The sharpened positioning makes VOLTA Basel an essential part of art week from June 10 to 16. As a boutique fair, it attracts international art connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.

Underrepresented Voices and Selected Highlights at VOLTA Basel

A focus for Artistic Director Lee Cavaliere, who has been at the helm of VOLTA since July 2023, is to present current artistic narratives of the world we live in and represent unheard voices in the art market space. Creative Growth Art Center, U.S.A is a non-profit that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and will exhibit at VOLTA Basel as part of its celebrations. The center supports artists with disabilities and presents artists including Dan Miller whose work was recently acquired for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art collection. VOLTA provides an access point to the market for contemporary artists affected by conflict. The Ukrainian photographer Bogdan Gulyay, will be presented by the Perve Galeria from Lisbon and Ribal Molaeb, a Lebanese artist who lives in Zurich, is presented by Artscoops Gallery from Beirut.

Other voices to highlight at the fair include: Wunika Mukan Gallery from Lagos, Nigeria. The gallery will present textile works by U.S. artist Erin LeAnn Mitchell who aims for her work to be a voice for the black community and life experience. The Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, U.S.A will present installations by the Panamanian-American artist Katrina Sánchez, who creates expansive and tactile sculptures from fabric. Also represented by the Abigail Ogilvy Gallery is Alison Croney Moses, one of the finalists of the Loewe Craft Prize, presenting amorphous wooden sculptures that represent motherhood.

FIRSTS | A curated space dedicated to the new

VOLTA FIRSTS is a new, curated section of the fair dedicated to presenting young galleries exhibiting in Basel for the first time. Galleries include IPERCUBO from Italy, Lagos from Mexico, Odds and Ends from Hong Kong, Perve Galeria from Portugal, SKAL from the United Kingdom/Spain, TAMARA KREISLER Gallery from Spain, Wolf & Nomad from the United States , Wunika Mukan Gallery from Nigeria, and and HOFA from United Kingdom /United States/ Greece.

VOLTA has a longstanding legacy of 19 years in Basel and has established a community of renowned galleries such as Ethan Cohen Gallery, U.S.A, Galerie Barbara Stechow and Galerie Heike Strelow, Germany who have been presenting artists at the fair for many years. The contrast of this community and FIRSTS highlights VOLTA’s evolution.

A Female Force at VOLTA Basel

The fair represents a stronghold of female galleries at the cusp of their trajectory upward through the market. At Basel 2024, this includes Gillian Jason Gallery from London, a third-generation gallery run exclusively by women and only representing female artists. The gallery will present Eleanor Johnson and Georgia Dymock who are showing figurative, large-format works repositioning the female form. Lechbinska Gallery from Zurich will present works by South Korean female painter Hyunae Hon Kang. The artist is the only female representative of Dansaekhwa, a monochrome painting style from South Korea inspired by Abstract Expressionism. Rademakers Gallery will present the female artist Bonnie Severien whose work reference architecture and sustainability. Other female owned galleries include Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Art Gallery 0-68, Galerie Anja Knoess, Galerie Barbara von Stechow, Galerie Heike Strelow, Galleri Ramfjord, Warin Lab Contemporary and many more.
